Fostering a pet has many benefits for both the animal and you.
It saves lives: fostering a pet in need is an important part of the rescue process because you’re providing an animal with a temporary home until his or her new forever owner finds them.
It allows us to assess the pet: when you take a pet home to live with you for a while, you can learn more about its habits, temperament, and level of training. We can then work with the animal to improve its chances of finding the best possible home.
It helps socialise the pet: fostering helps animals get used to living in a home environment and socialize with people and other pets.
Provides a break from shelter life: fostering can provide a break from shelter life; some pets find the shelter environment very stressful.
Helps find a permanent home: fostering increases a pet’s chances of finding a new forever home as it helps them get noticed by potential adopters.
Provides companionship: fostering provides companionship for both the pet and you as a foster carer.
‘Try before you Adopt’: fostering a pet is a great way to find out if pet ownership is for you, and also to help you find the right pet for yourself and/or family.
When you get involved in fostering a pet in need, the benefits aren’t all one-sided. You benefit too!
But don’t just take our word for it! There’s also plenty of scientific evidence to back up the benefits of having a pet in your life, even if it’s just as a foster-carer.
Organisations like the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) have done plenty of research over the years into the benefits of pet ownership. Here’s a few things they’ve found:
